چکیده

Using the geometric deenition of the topological charge we decompose the path integral of 2-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory into topological sectors. In a Monte Carlo simulation we compute the average value of the action as well as the distribution of its values for each sector separately. These numbers are compared with analytic lower bounds of the action which are relevant for classical conngura-tions carrying topological charge. We nd that quantum uctuations entirely dominate the path integral. Our results for the probability distribution of the Monte Carlo generated conngurations among the topological sectors can be understood by a semi-phenomenological argument .

Physics from the lattice : glueballs in QCD ; topology ; SU ( N ) for all

1 1 Introduction In these lectures I will show, through three examples, how current lattice calculations are able to tell us interesting things about the continuum physics of non-Abelian gauge theories. My first topic concerns the glueball spectrum. The physics question here is: where, in the experimentally determined hadron spectrum, are the glueballs hiding? I will first summarise what lattic...

0 A ug 1 99 8 DUAL LATTICE SIMULATIONS OF FLUX TUBES

Abelian gauge theories formulated on a space-time lattice can be used as a prototype for investigating the confinement mechanism. In U(1) lattice gauge theory it is possible to perform a dual transformation of the path integral. Simulating the obtained dual theory (which corresponds to a certain limit of a dual Higgs model) including external sources, we perform a very accurate analysis of flux...

Competing orders II: the doped quantum dimer model

We study the phases of doped spin S = 1/2 quantum antiferromagnets on the square lattice, as they evolve from paramagnetic Mott insulators with valence bond solid (VBS) order at doping δ = 0, to superconductors at moderate δ. The interplay between density wave/VBS order and superconductivity is efficiently described by the quantum dimer model, which acts as an effective theory for the total spi...

Topological symmetry, spin liquids and CFT duals of Polyakov model with massless fermions

We prove the absence of a mass gap and confinement in the Polyakov model with massless complex fermions in any representation of the gauge group. A U(1)∗ topological shift symmetry protects the masslessness of one dual photon. This symmetry emerges in the IR as a consequence of the Callias index theorem and abelian duality. For matter in the fundamental representation, the infrared limits of th...
